Using MagiScan for E-Commerce
Scan products, create interactive 3D previews, and integrate AR try-on experiences into your online store.
Why 3D for e-commerce?
Product returns are one of the biggest costs in online retail. Studies show that interactive 3D product views reduce return rates by up to 35% and increase conversion rates by 10-30%. Customers who can spin, zoom, and inspect a product in 3D feel more confident about their purchase.
With MagiScan, you can create production-quality 3D models of physical products using just your phone - no studio, no expensive equipment, no 3D modeling skills.
What you can do
- Interactive 3D product pages - embed a 3D viewer on your product listing so customers can rotate and zoom
- AR try-before-you-buy - let customers place furniture, decor, or accessories in their space using augmented reality
- Automated product shots - render 2D images of your 3D model from any angle, eliminating the need for repeated photography
- Social media content - short 3D spin videos for Instagram, TikTok, and product ads
Workflow
Scan your product
Set up a clean, well-lit area. Place the product on a plain surface and use MagiScan to capture it from all angles. For best results, follow our scan quality tips. Aim for complete 360-degree coverage including the top.
Review and clean the model
Open the finished model in MagiScan's 3D viewer. Check that all surfaces are captured, textures look accurate, and there are no artifacts. For product photography, small imperfections matter - re-scan if needed.
Export in the right format
For web embeds and 3D viewers, export as GLB - it is compact, widely supported, and includes textures. For Apple AR Quick Look (iPhone/iPad "View in AR"), export as USDZ. For editing in Blender before publishing, use OBJ.
Optimize for web
Large 3D files slow down page load. Keep GLB files under 5 MB for smooth performance. You can reduce file size by:
- Lowering polygon count with Blender's Decimate modifier (target 50-100K faces)
- Compressing textures to 1024x1024 or 2048x2048
- Using Draco compression (supported by most web 3D viewers)
Embed on your site
Add interactive 3D to your product page using one of these options:
- model-viewer (Google) - a free web component. Add a single
<model-viewer>tag with your GLB and USDZ files, and you get a 3D viewer with AR support out of the box - Sketchfab - upload your model and embed the iframe. Good for marketplaces and portfolios
- Shopify AR - Shopify natively supports 3D models (GLB + USDZ) on product pages
- Three.js - for custom viewers with full control over lighting, camera, and interaction
Best practices for product scanning
- Use consistent lighting across all product scans for a uniform look in your catalog
- Scan at the same scale so all products have correct relative sizing
- Batch your workflow - set up a scanning station and process multiple products in one session
- Name and organize exports with SKU numbers for easy integration with your product database
- Test on mobile - most e-commerce traffic is mobile. Make sure your 3D viewer loads fast and AR works smoothly on phones
Real-world results
Stores using interactive 3D product views report 10-30% higher conversion rates and significantly fewer "item not as described" returns. The investment in scanning pays for itself quickly, especially for high-value items like furniture, electronics, and fashion accessories.
