How to Scan an Object with MagiScan
Your first 3D scan from start to finish - install the app, prepare your object, capture it, and get a ready-to-use 3D model.
What you need
- An iPhone or Android smartphone
- MagiScan app installed from the App Store or Google Play
- An object to scan (start with something mid-sized like a shoe, figurine, or mug)
Step-by-step
Open MagiScan and tap Scan
Launch the app and tap Scan. If this is your first time, the app will ask for camera permission - grant it.
Choose your scanning mode
MagiScan offers several capture modes:
- 360 - great for beginners. Walk around the object while the app guides you through full coverage
- Freeform - for experienced users who want more control over capture angles
- Hybrid - for experienced users, combines depth and photo data for higher detail
- Upload Photo - upload your own set of images; best suited for experienced users who already have photos from multiple angles
If you are new to 3D scanning, start with 360.
Capture your object
Follow the on-screen instructions for your chosen mode. Keep the object still, move slowly, and make sure you capture it from all sides. Good lighting and a plain background help - see our scan quality tips for details.
Finish and review
When capture is complete, finish the scan and wait for processing if needed. The 3D viewer opens so you can rotate, zoom, and inspect your model. If something looks off, you can scan again.
What's next?
Once you have your first model, you can:
- Export it in GLB, OBJ, USDZ, or STL format for use in other tools
- Share it via a direct link or embed it in a website
- View in AR - place the model in your real environment through augmented reality
- 3D print it - check out our export for 3D printing guide
